This is largely forgotten, but in 1939 the government advised the population to have their dogs (and other pets) put down. And thousands of people did so! At the outset of the war it was feared that there would not be enough food to feed the nation's dogs.
I always had dogs as a child, long after the war of course, but there were still cruel old people ready to shout 'THAT'LL HAVE TO BE PUT DOWN IF THERE'S ANOTHER WAR!".
I'm always amazed at how people comply with destructive government orders. I bet there are still people having 'covid' boosters - are these the sorts of people who would kill their dog if the government said so?
There are photos of people queuing to have their dogs killed.
