The dangers of F1

I agree - hope he recovers. But........

what does one really expect, when ragging around at close to 200 mph in the pouring rain. That is why they are paid the big bucks.
If they wanted to make it safe, why not fit speed limiters? Oh yes, because then it wouldn't be a race.....

This appears to be a freak accident

He left the track and collided with a telescopic handler that was removing another car.

Anywhere else on the track and he would have hit safety barriers or tyre walls rather than the back of a piece of heavy machinery.

Hope he recovers - he seems to be a decent bloke

and no camera seems to have filmed it???

The one camera on that corner captured Sutil's crash, but one lap later if the same camera was following a car round the bend whilst the car behind it crashed into Sutil's wreckage, then no - it wouldn't have seen it.

All the cars carry forward facing cameras, but I would not expect F1 to release that due to the severity of the incident.

A couple of years ago when Massa was struck on the head, the camera footage was only released after it became clear that Massa would recover.

Judas Priest !!

One lucky young lady treated for shock - no other spectator injuries !!
Several sets of soiled undergarments - no doubt !

During competitive motorsport do not spectate on the outside of a bend !! Notso common sense. Most out of control metal is heading that way.

The girl at the end had a narrow escape.
Stupid clowns.

Heads should roll over this (no pun intended)...

Not only was a previous crash not deemed sufficient to bring in the safety car over an obviously dangerous situation, but apparently the air ambulance was unable to fly...

Either of those events should have been enough to suspend/call the race off...

All we'll hear of course will be 'lessons will be learned' blah blah...

It's always the same!

Cheers Conny. I was looking on the internet yesterday for video of the crash, but all I could find was the one from the camera showing the first car that went off. Bianchi was the other side of the tyre wall, so that camera didn't see anything really, but this video shows in graphic detail his impact with the tractor.
Ellal, totally agree with what your saying there. The race should have been postponed. Even some of the drivers agree that the race should never have gone ahead.

^^^^^

So why didn't any drivers pull into the pits and say "this is too dangerous to drive in?"

It's the pursuit of points that great a draw?

When every car is now electronically governed, why not send an instant kill switch to all cars in the event of an accident, each car instantly hits a pitlane style throttle limiter.
Maybe yellow flashing light 5 sec before it activates to warn any driver balancing on throttle mid corner..
All cars down to min speed within 15seconds or so. Easy to do.

He was driving too fast, (all accidents are speed related) the FIA have done plenty to make this sport safe.
It used to be watched for the accidents.

IMHO it was just a matter of time before an already crashed car and/or driver and / or marshals and/or their equipment were again hit by another out of control car, especially on the outside of a bend including entrance and exit.
...at Suzuka 20 years ago, when McLaren driver Martin Brundle spun off a couple of hundred metres further along the track from Bianchi's incident. At the time, Brundle narrowly missed a tractor unit, and he has talked since that he thought it might be curtains for him. Instead, he hit and badly injured a marshal, who was recovering the car of another driver who had gone off a few minutes earlier...
Mini Tower cranes mounted on tracks behind the barriers ?? Drop the hook, hoist car 30 ft then trolley in - job virtually done.

Why do they, the drivers, do it ? Love of racing, ego ? Then when it becomes obvious to most of them they will never be a winner - money, blind belief ? - The teams? Money... £375 mil between top 10 teams p/a.

Just watch out for the empty grandstands effectively 'airbrushed' out maybe because BE has total control... Slip sliding away...!
