Thermostat Advice

Hi! I have a 6yr old Honeywell CM907 wired thermostat which, whilst still controlling my central heating fine, has a degraded LCD display so that it's now impossible to read. I'm looking for advice on what I should replace it with...Should I simply give in and get another CM907 or is there another manufacturer/model that would do the job.

I can get a CM907 for £70, so I wouldn't want to spend much more without getting more benefits. Of course, if I can spend less, then that's good too

Swap like for like. You could try contacting honeywell to see if the production date coincides with a dodgy batch, btu at 6 years, I doubt you'll get much joy.

Before you rush into replacing it. Have you tried replacing the batteries?

I've been replacing the batteries every other year out of habit

I've had a dialogue with Honeywell over the last couple of years about this (it;s only just reached the stage that it's completely unreadable) - it's not an isolated issue, unfortunately, but because it first happened outside of warranty, they won't replace it. Whilst it might be easiest to replace like-for-like, I'd sort of prefer another brand because I'm concerned that it might happen again - I happen to think that its not unreasonable to expect an LCD screen to last longer than 4-6 years.

Delta dore tybox 117 or tybox 217 are good. 5 year warranties on them as well

But his CM907 is 6 years old and so a 5 year warranty would not have helped.

They don't seem as reliable as we would expect. But on the other hand are easy to set and work well so I am still happy to recommend them to my customers for a wired stat.

I had to replace one a few weeks ago because the contacts on the output relays were intermittent. For fun over Christmas as we are no longer going out for a curry, I may replace the relays and see how much longer it will run for.

To be honest I only started fitting the delta dore recently through recommendation on the cc forum after having so many probs with honeywell stuff (although to be fair it is the st9400c that I have had all the problems with) the cm907s have been reliable for me. But out of principle I won't be installing anymore honeywell stats or programmers.

Ps. Instead of the st9400c I am now installing Drayton mitime.

The entire CM range has suffered from dodgy displays for a significant period of production. Under EU standards and goodwill Honeywell will normally replace an item like this, but only usually up to 5yrs old, as this is considered to be a definition of 'fit for purpose'.

I still use CM because 8 years after it came out, it is still the easiest to use unit of its type on the market, with the possible exception of the Evohome thermostat, which is of course Honeywell too.

If you buy a Delta Dore, look forward to an interface that has been designed by someone who has clearly never been on a human factors course. (Always a job for them at Vaillant).
