I have a twenty year plus Thorn M56/76C freestanding boiler. The problem i am having is when it heats the water by gravity it bangs very loudly, however when it heats the rads with the pump it is quiet.I am going to have it replaced in the spring but it is so noisy I am worried it may not last.

its 'kettling'

Nothing to worry about until its replaced.

It wakes us up in the night when i presume the hot water temp. drops enough to bring the boiler on.Is there anything i can do to quieten it.

Well you can. You can try boiler silencer by Fernox. Cheaper version is ear plugs or time you boiler so the demand for heat be-it by hot water or central heating, is during your waking hours.

DS40 may help! Not advised unless you can spot and repair the pinholes.
