My house is 10 years old, and over time, a loud ticking sound has developed. When ever we turn on the facuet, flush the toliet, or turn on the shower, a ticking sound comes from the basement and walls (mostly the basement, which is unfinished). The water supply pipes are fastened to the bottom of the floor joists in the basement before the turn 90 degrees and run up the walls.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Is it contraction/expansion? Has the house settled and caused the pipes to bind? How do I fix this?

Thanks

As the pipes expand or contract they drag through the clips or through the grooves in the joists. You could try a suitable lubricant to allow the movement without snatching.
