I have a engineer draw up a beam 2/250 x75 timbers with a 240x10 steel plate between I have a prob in that the wall is 100mm on one side
could I use a 250x100 and 2steel plates would this be ok ?
No, because that would not be a true flitched beam.
In a normal flitched beam, the steel plate is assumed to take the majority of the bending stress, while the timbers each side serve mainly to prevent the plate from buckling. If the plates are on the outside, the only thing to stop them buckling before they reached their maximum allowable stress would be the bolts. There would need to be so many of them that it would make the timber like a Swiss cheese.
But the question is, why use a flitched beam in the first place?
