Treating a wooden mantle shelf above a wood burning fire

Hi,

I'm after some advice if possible.

We have just had a wooden beam installed about a foot above a wood burning fire in the living room mainly to protect the TV from heat which is installed on the fireplace above.

My concern is how can i protect the wooden beam from getting too hot? Is there a coating / finish i could use to protect & treat it without causing any blistering?
