But if the mindset is that the US is biding its time for a bigger attack, the long game just got a lot longer.

If the US are stringing it out, I believe their objective is more economic damage to Iran to the point it becomes untenable.
Iran currently losing $500 million a day on oil revenue, banking system collapsed, struggling to pay troops and 100% inflation, that can't go on for too long.
You're right about the mid terms though. Expect a big push by Iran in October.

Interesting perspective (from the bit before the pay wall). I can understand Irann strategically wanting to delay and prevaricate in order to maximise political damage to Trumpf before the mid terms, review the outcome and then either negotiate or more of the same. But if the mindset is that the US is biding its time for a bigger attack, the long game just got a lot longer.
The US has more military force it can use, but the cost to them would be significant and they don't want to do it.

The US may be waiting for after the upcoming elections to escalate further but in all likelihood Trump just wants it to go away and is hoping economic sanctions will achieve that. Sanctions have never broken a country on their own as far as I know.

That's why Iran is so confident that they're increasing the demand they're making on the US.

In which case the logical next step is Amerrican troops on the ground

Yes, but the cost there would be awful. The US has been doing war games with Ukrainian troops in Germany and have seen how hard they get hit by drones, Iran is fully looped into drone production for the Russian war as well as the Yemeni/Saudi war and the risk of significant casualties recorded on TV with the targets face the last thing seen before the drone explodes is something Trump doesn't want.

In theory the US can win the war, they have the military might, but they don't want it enough to pay the price.
