Types of sandpaper

Hello,

I'm a bit confused about the merits of the different sorts of sandpaper, wet and dry paper, and carbon something paper (I've forgotten the name of the last).

Is wet and dry used wet on the wood? Or do you wet it to wash off the paint from the paper itself?

No such thing as Sand paper as my old woodwork master used to tell us . Glasspaper , Aluminium Oxide paper. Wet+dry is a washable paper
