Hi Guys, I plan on fitting wood/engineered floor in my front room and would like to undercut the
stone base around the fire place so that the flooring boards fit nicely under the base.

Ive got an angle grinder but i don't think that would allow me to cut a perfectly straight undercut all the way around the base

Ive had a bit of a look online and it seems i need to use something called an undercut or Jamb saw.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get hold of these to rent in the UK?

All the ones im able to find are in the US.

Thanks
Rob

a jamb saw is for cutting wood as far as i know

sorry, i forgot to add.....i found a vid with someone using a diamond blade to cut stone so assumed this would be do able providing i can get the correct sized blade.

just need to find somewhere to get the saw

Send laminatemaster an email, as them what it's called, and then try and hire one. This is not the best of suggestions, but you could try a diamond blade in and angle grinder, and run it along a flat piece of wood, and use the guard to help you control the depth.

make sure you get the correct machine as you cant fit a stone blade to a machine designed for wood cutting as far as i know

I hope i'm wrong but that looks like a door trimming saw fitted with a masonry disc.

Edit:

I take it back - it's a Crain fitted with a masonry blade

You could try a multitool fitted with diamond grit cutter.

What about something like this ?
or this? both have diamond blades included

Looks good but looks like it only does vertical cuts.

Could turn it on its side but not sure if you.could control the height of the cut

You can buy jamb saws by Crain, Roberts and Virutex here, and AFAIK they all have ceramic blades available, however those blades are designed toi cut soft ceramic wall tiles, not brick. Not seen one of these units for hire from the main hire shops, although flooring specialists (firms that supply screeds, laminate, etc to the trade) might be one source

Put a piece of the flooring against the fireplace, and scribe a line, then use a 4 1/2inch angle grinder with a diamond blade. It'll make a bloody mess, but it'll do the job nicely. If you can pulse the grinder, rather than run it continuously, then that'll help keep the dust down.
