Hi, we unscrewed a light switch to paint round it and now all the electric in the house is going off when we switch power back on for the upstairs lights. What could have gone wrong please?

You can check yourself, but do make sure the circuit is isolated. I know you have said it has tripped but cannot be too careful.
It could also be that when removing the fitting that one or more cables have become loose and have touched when securing fitting back.
If it is all the electrics there is a chance that an earth to neutral is tripping the RCD.

Yes, power still off ?

Just redo what you have done with the switch and make sure none of the wires is damaged or get trapped by the screws.

We will try tomoz, if we don't reset the upstairs light fuse everything else stays on so can cope with that for now. Thanks very much, I hate electrics :)

Wet paint providing path from line to earth and tripping RCD?
