Pulling up carpets we've found lots of really thick underlay which gives the impression it might be made of horse hair - certainly not modern rubbery stuff.
We've sanded the floors so this is surplus to requirements as underlay but it gives the impression of quality and would be a shame to chuck?

I wondered if it has any uses - and if it is actually better than modern products? I have pulled the ceiling down in my cellar and was wondering about cutting strips to line the underside of the floorboards, prior to fitting insulation - I'd heard it has good sound-cancelling properties which might be good for a solid wood floor above, or that I might turn the cellar into a music room!

so called horsehair is often coconut fibre. Is it gingery-brown?

Some people like to shred it into compost.
