Is the banging more of a clunk?
It sounds that you have a new type diverter valve, (suprised if this not so) which has 4 mm viewing holes on the side, but have an original pcb fitted. The software was changed to slow the movement of the diverter on changeover.
A new pcb is probably what you need.
