Hi All,

I've had my Vaillant ecotec plus 30 boiler for around 6 years, and during this time been using the Vsmart Gateway and Thermostat. Last 2 weeks gateway seems to have developed an intermittent fault, where it keeps on losing signal.
I've been through all the diagnosis with vaillant and it would seem replace this and the thermostat are the suggested course of action. This is costly (£200) and I've not been that impressed by the controls. I'm also going away next week so need to do something quickly.

I'm going away next week and was thinking as a temporary solution purchasing a cheap thermostat from screwfix or similar, removing the gateway from the e-bus. Taking out the RT 24v link in the boiler and wiring in a 230V room thermostat. Would this be the quickest cheapest solution, and does any one have any advice for this? And any recommendations on room thermostats?

Thanks in advance

You shouldn't have the front cover off your boiler unless you're Gas Safe Registered. It forms the safety room seal for the appliance. A quick solution to give a bit of frost protection while you're away would be to remove the BUS connections and link permanent Live to the 230V RT connection, then turn the flow temperature down low. Having had the case off though, you should really call a professional in to carry out the Regulation 26.9 checks before turning the boiler back on again.

Thanks, for the advice. Just to check I am right in thinking you would remove the 24V link on the RT next to the bus too?

If you’re linking the 230vac then yes remove the 24v link, but imo until you have a new thermostat leave the 24v link in. You could also use the 24v side for switching.

With the e-bus wires removed. but the 24V link in. The boiler should in theory be permanently on yes?

Rather than removing the 24v Link and linking across the 230V from L to 230V RT?

A simple thermostat switch could be installed across the 24V RT terminals, until I've got a better solution and decided ultimately what control system to go for?

Yes, permanently on, unless controlled by a thermostat or time switch/clock. A thermostat capable of 24v/volt free would be ok. Need to do as per @muggles though regarding the cover.
