Varnish - changing from antique to dark?

Hi, Ive got a mirror in the hall and a small cupboard in an antique pine stain/varnish but I want to change these to a darker almost black /brown colour

Can I just give them a sand and put a couple of coats of of say walnut varnish on them

Yep...just give it a light rub down first...thin the new varnish as there may be a tendancy for it to slide about a bit when your applying it and cause streaks/brushmarks
