painting over walnut varnish with dark oak

Hi,

I have just put a coat of walnut varnish on my floors I sanded and I am not convinced the colour is what I want. I was wandering if I could paint over he walnut varnish with a dark oak varnish instead? Ay suggestions on whether this is a good idea or not?
