Varnishing in sections

Hi all,
I've recently replaced the old floorboards in my front room (a suspended floor), and I was wondering if it's possible to varnish the new boards in sections? The reason I ask is that while I can remove most of the furniture like the coffee table and TV stand, the sofas are too bulky to move easily and I have nowhere to store them while working.

Therefore, I was planning on gathering them in one half of the room, marking off with masking tape and varnishing the free area, then shifting the sofas to the done side, masking the varnished section, and finishing the rest off.

Has anyone ever varnished a floor like this? Or have any suggestions that might make things a little easier?

Should be ok , can you stand sofa on end? Frees up more space .

Not really - they're electric recliners and I don't want to risk the mechanisms. Thanks for the suggestion though!

the join will show because your not workin to a wet edge

if they are floorboards (i.e. planks) then you can break at the join of one board to the next. You have to clean all the dirt and dust out, sand it, vacuum it, wipe it, and wipe each section again immediately before treating it. Just work you way along one or more boards at a time, from end to end of the room, and kneeling on the dry side. I find that once you've got the hang of it, you can do about three boards at a time without losing the wet edge.

I'm told you can also varnish a floor using a clean soft broom, though this sounds a bit slapdash to me.

the OP can only do one area of the floor at a time - allow to dry - move furniture - an do the remainder workin to a dry edge.

apply with a 6" quality paint brush - never with a broom.
