Hi

Have used Celotex to insulate between the rafters. Was just wondering about the 2 walls either side of the room (The ones that join to our neighbours)

These have been battened out ready to board & plaster but do they really need insulating. One side just goes straight onto next door and the other end has the chimney stack in it.

Hope I have explained all that correctly, any help greatly appreciated.

p.s. No building regs involved in this, not gonna be a bedroom etc.

the adjoining lofts are presumably uninsulated and cold, so may be freezing in winter.

You only need to insulate the walls if you want your loft to be warm in winter.

How will you ventilate it to prevent condensation?

Be aware that when you sell the house, buyers will need to pull the plasterboard off the rafters, and the flooring off the joists, to see what state they're in and what has been cut, since you will not have any Building Control or PP. A plastered and insulated loft with your velux windows is easy to spot as a non-compliant halfway loft conversion.

Thanks for the quick reply.

There is a Velux roof window fitted already. Take it that this would be enough to ventilate the place?

Both neighbours already use their lofts but unsure about insulation in their properties. Sounds like it would be best to insulate both walls, just wasnt sure if just doing the roof would be enough?

There is currently a 50mm gap between insualtion and the slates (There is no felt, just slate) This is continuous from one of the eaves, over the ridge tile and down to the other eaves.

Just wasnt sure about the party walls, presume any insulation would be better than none.

If you feel that heat from your loft is being lost through your neighbours walls, then there's nothing wrong with your proposal.
Of course, insulation only retains the temperature of the surrounding space, be it hot or cold.....it may not be worth it.
John :)
