I have just bought the wife a VW polo, it has done 100k on a 99 T (little high but mainly motorway)

When the engine is cold and I start her up it is a little noisy for a few mins (sounds like a tappety noise to me) - is this common??

What can I do about it and should I be worried??

sounds like the non return valves in the hydaulic tappits to me. shouldnt be a problem if it subsides within a few seconds. its just waiting for the oil pump to work up the pressure in the tappets. I had an escort that did the same thing for years.

If its coming from the head is probably just a tappet as you said - maybe the oil feed lines are partially blocked with something - new oil & filter may help. If there is sludge inside the oil filler cap it may be a good idea to use engine flush additive to dissolve some of it before you drain the oil. The tappet itself could be faulty which isnt great news, but wouldnt worry too much as long as the bottom end sounds ok (big end / main bearings ok)
