Originally thought this was a drivebelt slipping problem, as it works fine with a half or light load, but if anything heavy like towels in the drum then it turns a little way then sticks and rocks back when the motor disengages.

Taking the back off there's nothing wrong with the belt and it doesn't slip when the fault happens, it just looks like the motor isn't strong enough to turn the drum (which spins freely by hand, BTW, so no problem there either)

Any suggestions?

Oops, nearly forgot, it's a Diplomat 8512

hi yes does sound like the motor,.try replacing the brushes before thinking about buying a new motor, cheap fix at about £10,there usually easy to replace....

Thanks for the tip, but after posting the above I then found this discussion, which described exactly the same problem and a possible solution:

So it looked like the start capacitor was worth a try.

Luckily I managed to find the right one in a local electricals shop and it seems to have done the trick - just finished the first heavy load in weeks with no problems (fingers crossed for future)
