Washing machine pipe cleaning

Hello.
A few months ago my washing machine went faulty...anyway, long story short, I done some research on the net and I saw some info on cleaning your washing machine pipes every so often to get rid of the sludge and rubbish that builds up over time..

Is it recommended to do a really hot wash but using an empty drum or something? Any info would be much appreciated.
