Can anyone tell me exactly what this involves and how I activate it?

If you would like notification when a reply posted to a topic, then you click Watch this topic for replies, which appears on the bottom left hand side when viewing a topic. You will then receive an email when a reply is posted.

If you are already watching a topic the link will say Stop watching this topic and this will cancel any further notification of replies.

You can visit Watched Topics for a full list of what topics you are watching.
