Hi

Not wanting a water butt as it will look an eyesore in the garden

So thinking of
chopping a section at the bottom off a house drain pipe about 5-10 inch
a screw top for the open drain pipe on either end
Putting a tap at the bottom of the drain pipe and using the drain pipe as the water butt
Over flow water will run to other drain pipes via guttering
Opening the screw top once a year to get rid of any leafs

Anyone done this - pros cons?

Thanks in advance

A bit of pipe, will have not much capacity to store any rainwater, hardly enough to keep a window-box watered.

I don't understand this bit:
a screw top for the open drain pipe on either end

Cons: Drain pipe joints are not waterproof. When the water backs up to the level of the first joint it will leak from that joint. The pipe will carry a tiny amount of water compared to a water butt. Water in the pipe will freeze in winter and split the pipe.

Pros: You can't see a water butt.

Thanks for the input - the tap would be open in winter - so will drain

Screw tap one half - to stop water coming out but able to unscrew to remove leafs

Screw tap for other half (the one going in ground to make it look pretty

Yeah I was thinking that - though it would be from ground to the 2nd floor so maybe 2 window boxes

thanks for input - appreciated
