Water hammer from sprinkler

Have you checked what your incoming water pressure?
Perhaps that can be reduced if it's very high.

Thanks. I haven't measured it, but I wouldn't want it to be any lower. The shower is just strong enough as it is and the cat spray wouldn't reach far enough if any lower.

So the water pressure isn't the issue.

Install an arrestor before each problematic valve if it's causing you concern.

Don't bother with the hollow air filled ideas, since they will eventually become water logged and useless.

OK. I think I'll begin with the cat spray then. I assume that the nearer to it, the better?

As for the type, as I understood it they all contain air. The ones I've seen contain either a piston with O-rings or a flexible membrane like the expansion tanks in boilers. Is that right and, if so, which would you recommend?

Yes, the nearer the arrestor to the valve, the better, isn't not going to absorb much shock if it's 5 meters away for instance.

Either type - piston or diaphragm are fine.
