Hi there.

understandably the weather has been bloody awful the last few days but am quite worried about water ingress we have on one of our chimney walls.
We are currently renovating one of the upstairs rooms and typically have literally just finished painting ready for a new cast iron fireplace to be fitted then the carpet. Suppose it’s good we saw this now on the positive.

Firstly, last year we had new flaunching, new chimney pots, and repointing to both stacks on the house. There are 2 stacks with 2 chimneys in each. The work cost around 1000 in total but due the some previous water ingress in another room we just got it all sorted.

Over the last 2 days we have had quite a bit of water ingress in one of the upstairs bedrooms, so currently have the chimney exposed which has helped notice this a little better. There is water coming straight down the chimney itself, and also water coming down the wall, just above the chimney hole.

Has anyone got any advice for me please as to where this will be coming from.

I have added some pics for you.

thank you in advance.

mike.

Mike Hi,
The water coming straight down the flue is typically coming from the crown of the chimney stack - ie flaunching or pots etc.
The water coming down the wall at the cove in pic #1. is possibly coming down from faulty stack flashing.

What about any other chimney breasts in the house - any signs of water damage?
Why not go into the roof and examine the loft chimney breast, & the roof area around the c/breast for wetness or water staining.

Pics showing the stack its flashing, and if possible pics of the stack crown would help?

Where and why were previous roof repairs carried out?

Mike's the name . Not Alec
I've seen a job where 2500 was spent rebuilding a chimney by others, only to have the same problem. A £35.00 cowl sorted it.

Open your mind ..if you have one .(of your own)
