Family member had an upstairs water leak which resulted in electics in kitched getting wet. Leak is all sorted now (and power is off).

How long before it'll dry and be safe to use (family member has moved in with us temporarily)? Or should we be getting someone in to check? Insurance claim ongoing but will they pay for someone to come out and check?

Water gets everywhere. It sits in hidden boxes. So drying-out time is variable. Certainly days, but could be much longer.

The only sure way is to have an electrician carry out insulation resistance tests on the wiring. This needs to be done before the system can be safely re-energised. Send invoice to insurance company along with everything else.

While I was away leak in bathroom, they waited 2 months for me to get back, it was still wet, in fact the light bulb had cracked and was half full of water, and as luck had it swapped bulb and all was good. However anything hot when water hits cools, as it cools there is a part vacuum inside, so it sucks the water inside, so as said already, has to be tested.

What exactly got wet, and how wet?

Hard to predict. Much depends on what got wet, and how wet, and what has been done to open up the wet bits to allow the air to get at them. And whether people can go there in the interim to open windows for a few hours.

You an do a lot yourselves by looking inside things that got wet and seeing if they are now dry.

Nobody here can answer that. You need to ask the insurers.
