i have a water main running through my field. It only has 300mm cover on top of the crown. I've requested it be replaced as I believe it was buried too shallow. It was laid in 1956 on agreement of the then owner of the property. I've two questions...

1. Am I liable for the cost of replacing the pipe?
2. If so are we talking £10k or £50k?

Thanks all

Two things really,

1. You believeing it being too shallow and it being too shallow are two different things.

2. If there is nothing worng with the pipe, i.e. it has been installed correctly, and you still want it moved, then you may well be liable...

EDIT: this is in relation to the standards when it was laid and not current standards...

We had a lead water main replaced with plastic a few years ago. They used moling equipment to install a run of about 20m or so. Cost about £600.
