Water softener efficiency (which one is cheaper to run?)

The issue with Harvey softeners is that they only take block salt which is expensive compared to tablets. A 25Kg bag of salt in my monarch lasts 3 months.
 
The other issue is that Harvey are remarkably expensive.

They have an expensive marketing operation.

What happens if you use tablet salt in a Harvey? Surely it dissolves in water the same way?
 
They would need a guard in the salt container to prevent the tablets escaping everywhere.
