Hello everyone, I struggled to get any valuable info on rendering and eventually I purchased a dvd on ebay from UKSPREADS. The chap making the dvd does a great job of explaining mixes etc and the demonstrations were unhurried, well explained and very useful. I set off doing a practice panel on the side of my old garage which is due for demolition and, following the dvd to the letter, produced a very acceptable job. Before attempting the actually job on my bungalow, however, I have one question which is not explained in the dvd and that is: "Why is waterproofer added to the base coat and not the top coat?" Any suggestions will be appreciated. Cheers!

you wouldent have bought that dvd from uk spreads dave dident sell them on e bay, other people were making money from them on e bay, i was only saying this the other week, but to your question about waterproofer there is no need to put it in the top coat if you have put it in the scratch coat that will sufice and will also hold things back for you, i havent seen daves dvds myself does he tell you to put lime in the top coat? because lime and waterproofer dont mix have a look at some older posts http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=236249

Thanks for the speedy reply. I had my doubts about the seller on ebay but he did advertise that he had permission to sell - iffy? The dvd clearly states - UKSPREADS but I am not sure if that relates to the website of the same name. No mention of lime just the following: scratch coat of 4:1 plastering sand/cement plus waterproofer followed the next day by a top coat of 5:1 plus plasticiser. Rub up and sponge at appropriate time. For ease and consistency I carefully guaged the mix using a bucket and premixed the waterproofer/plasticiser in 25l containers. Wickes additives work out at waterproofer 833ml/25l and plasticiser at 312ml/25l. Thanks for the link.

PS I think the guy in the dvd calls himself, "Big Budd" or "Big Buddy"?
