Good morning everybody,
I live on a complex in spain and we all share tv and internet through one very big sattelite dish,(think jodrell bank).
The man who runs the complex has a pole fixed to the outside of his apartment and I presume this is how everybody recieves a Wi Fi signal.
If I use this laptop (Dell inspiron 1011-5233) close to the said pole, there is no problem, everything is fine,...5bars/signal strength=excellent.
But if I want to use it in the apartment, the signal is poor, and everything is much slower, and sometimes lose it completely.
I have read of...access points and usb adaptors and boosters etc, but I would be gratefull of anybodys knowledge as to what to buy.
Thanks
Amstel.

Google for a plugin wifi repeater or external to internal repeater. As i guess you want an antenna externally broadcasting into your house...

Thanks FESTIVE, we did a bit of searching and come up with this, do you think this will do the trick?

Alfa model number=AWUSO36H wifi booster, we can buy a 5m cable and a larger antenna. for about £40 total. on Amazon.
Cheers.

Hmmm that's a good option yes, certainly not tried one, but some good reviews there on Amazon. Nice one, good luck!

If the walls in the apartment are concrete - then this is why you are having the issue, if you can locate a repeater(access point with a repeater fuction) by the window as long as it can either have a clear line of sight or be close to then a repeater should solve the problem

Best way to test is to locate laptop by the window & see what signal strength you get.

PD1971, cheers for that, and yes when I take laptop outside it is excellent signal, have a look at my last reply and see what you think about the ALFA AWUSO36h wi fi booster, with a 5m cable? it has very good reviews on Amazon. Thanks.

Sorry to muddy the waters, not all repeaters will work if the primary router is not happy with WDS.

An option would be to use a high gain wifi (client) product, eg http://hawkingtech.com/products/hawking_products/range_&_mobility/HWDN3.html

Just point it in the general direction of the router. I had one for a while and was impressed with it.

The aerials in many laptops are a bit pants, in ipads they are even worse. At least you can move the usb product around.

Sorry I didn't get back to you before

Personally I'd look at using a access point instead of the ALFA wifi booster as it still needs to be connected to a 5m cable - a repeater would take this out of the equation

Have a look at the Edimax products - very reliable - good value for money plus pretty easy to setup

or any of the access point with a repeater mode

Netgear are another one you might wish to look at

The other option to look at is the HP-2002APn as it has a repeater mode
