I'm a competent DIY'er but know nothing about roofs so I want to see what my options are here. I have a void above part of my garage (the other half joins the house and there is a room above so I'm only takling about what is shown inteh photos). I would like to board the area for storage and ideally have a loft ladder for easy access so the first thing to tackle would be making it strong enough to suppor my weight and some light storage. For that I think there are 2 options, sister the existing horizal section or run some additional 9" x 2" joists on joist handers and board over the top so that the boarded floor 'floats' above the existing structure. The second thing, and I'm looking for advice here, is how big a job is it to open up the void by removing the beams shown in red and replacing the ones shown in blue with something strong enough that it doesn't need the supports shown in red. This sis something I would definitely been getting someone qualified to do, but as I have no idea how big of a job it is, I don't want to waste a tradie's time in getting a quote if it is a massive job without first finding out what is roughly envolved. Any advice much appreciated!
