120 grade is the most common used grade. Can use on filler and to rub down old paint finishes.
If you just want to de gloss a finish then 180 to 240 depending on how rough the surface is.
Denib between coats you need 320 grade.
Sometimes you just have to try a few grades and see what works.
Also you can buy grades like 120 with a thick backing paper or a thin backing paper, so it depends what your are sanding it you need sandpaper which is a bit ridgied or flexible.
Start with thick green or yellow 120.
Buy some gray thinner 120 and 240.
