Can anyone tell me what the item in the photograph is please, what it's function is and how I might stop it from leaking?

it's a trap to keep the smell out for a WC normally but has other uses.

Used when the overflow pipe is connected to a soil or waste pipe.

To stop it leaking repair the toilet should do the trick

Some more details would be helpful.

If that is connected to an oil or gas boiler then it would be the
condense trap. (I would suspect a Worcester oil boiler)
