I have just bought a 1950's maisonette and in one of the bedrooms I found this in the corner or the room (had been papered over). At first I thought it might be a fire place but on closer reflection I can see that this is not the case (no chimney for a start or concrete hearth). I still assume that it might be some form of heater but can anyone confirm?

1950's, "electric log" fires were popular, with a rotating propellor and a red lamp to give a flickering flame effect. Can you see traces of an electricity supply?

what's that at the back?

That makes perfect sense John - thanks for that. Not sure what the cable that can be seen supplies (or supplied) as I haven't explored it yet but with its location I guess it probably had something to do with the electric fire. What I don't understand is why they didn't remove the "structure" when they took the fire out?
