The trick is to push the lever to the open position, hold it into the notch, and let the spring pull it back to closed. When the lever is against the side of the notch it will hold itself there until you reset it manually or by applying power to the motor (when it will open and the lever will spring out of the notch). Well that's my limited experience anyway.
