What to do with border around patio?

Reaching out for advice. We have these two borders around our patio. I had tried using chippings to fill the borders, but weeds still got through and it looked terrible. (Also used weed killer)

I’ve now in process of removing the stones to try something else. (Images attached) Would you suggest plants or maybe decorative slabs that would fill the gap? (Or something else)

Also, if I go for paving slabs, could I use the thin layer of stones remaining as a sub base for the cement?

Thank you.

I made a little trench round mine and filled it with gravel - it is a good little soakaway in heavy rain or washing the slabs

Thanks. Yours looks v nice but our border is probe to v resilient weeds. Made the stones look terrible after a while.

make the trench 4 or 5 inches deep, lay some landscaping fabric at the bottom, wash all small stuff out of the gravel before you put it in, and if ny weeds do come up (which is unlikely) the spray with round up
