what to do with the stairs

We are remodeling our basement and need to find something to do to finish the stairs. we don't want carpeting and we think that laminate flooring will be too slick. Right now we are thinking about replacing the worn pine treads with oak treads and painting the risers. Any other ideas?

If we do replace the treads what type of finish should we put on? Would an oil finish such as linseed oil or tung oil work well?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
