What to do with this step

Any suggestions for how to finish this?

Want to have a recessed mat behind the front door but don’t know what to do to finish the little step into the house.

Walls either side of the little step have had plasterboard added to them.

My concern is that it’s set back slightly from the wall each side (which I plan to add skirting to). I can’t visualise how I’ll deal with it being set back

Pack out the front with some wood then cut skirting to height at the door opening only and run skirting straight across.

Then you only need to cover the top
