What's the purpose of paper that cover different types of plasterboards? Can it be removed?

Might sound as a silly question but there's a genuine reason for my question.

My bathroom fitter, put on some moisture resistant plasterboard in the shower box. Then he applied a first coat of tanking membrane.

Unfortunately he did a very poor job: he didn't push in the tape that goes into corners properly and the result is that there are bumps of air trapped behind. He also used a trowel instead of a roller with the result of an uneven application of the membrane with lumps and voids. Basically the worst surface ever to tile over.

I really want to remove the tape from the corners and tape it in again. If I do so though, it's likely that the paper on the plasterboard will come of together with the tanking membrane and tape. Is that a problem?

I know many will say to reboard it completely. But I would prefer not to do it, if not strictly necessary.

Thanks!

"Reboard it completely" lt is not recommended to put plaster board (even moisture resistant board ) if you are going to tile on it in a wet area like a shower. Which l take it that is where it is going? You would be better off using Hardibacker board, which is completely water proof when put on with the proper tanking kit. As for stripping the board like you say l wouldnt even consider that option.

As far as I know if you use hardiebacker and tape the joints with adhesive you don't have to tank the boards if your tiling over.

Suppose man made shower cubicle boards might be a way forward. Since these are water tight, the background surface is of little relevance.

Never seen a shower with plasterboard that did not fail. Even tiles onto backer board if not done correctly results in leaks, prefer shower panels myself , very few edges to seal.
