in the absence of recommendations, whats the secret to getting a good job done by a trade?

Over the years I've come to the conclusion that 99% of the time people go to work for the money therefore for starters if you want a good job, you must pay well.

Goes without saying, one should treat the trades with respect!

But if you do both the above, its still no guarantee of a good job...

any other tips??!!

Do job per contract/as expected and don't be a knob.

What are you doing to ask the question?

though in a trade myself, I also have need of them. During the last year I've had to use other trades out of my area on a rental property and am about to repeat the process on a similar property in another area. And then the fun starts because with no personal recommendation you can only go on instinct and how the guy you contact comes across. I just wondered how the trades on here pick their people when they have no recommendations and whether I'm missing anything with the selection process!

From my point of view, I react most positively to customers who

1. trust me to do the work
2. dont buy on price
3. happy to pay that bit more
4. pleasant and easy to deal with

If they tick the above boxes, I go that bit further for them....
