What's this valve for?

I have an indirect, vented HW tank as part of vented CH system which is Y plan.

Between the flow and return to the HW tank heating coil there is a pipe Teed directly between them with a gate valve in the middle of it. The pipe looks like it is 10mm.

At first I thought this was for balancing buit that doesn't work out. Is it a bypass to increase the temperature of the water returning to the boiler, for when the HW is turned on with the tank stone cold? If so, how do I correctly set the valve?

It was put in as a safety device, gate valves shouldn't be used for this purpose these days. Your best bet is to replace it with an auto bypass valve but otherwise have it just cracked open

Breesey is right the valve is fitted as a manual bypass to dissapate the heat from the boiler when or if all radiators are off and the boiler is running

Sorry gents, still confused

This is on the hot water circuit, not the radiator circuit. There's no other valves on the HW circuit so I don't think it can be a safety device.

I can imagine it might be to bleed some hot water back to the boiler return to increase the return water temperatire when the tank is very cold, but then I would have thought hardly any water would have flowed through here when there is the 22mm heating coil for it to go through???

Its an by-pass valve, you don't need it on a Y plan as has been said previously.

Turn it off.
