Hi all,

I have decided to leave my new skirting board unpainted in the bathroom. Would just like to know which is the best way to go regarding varnish / oil / laquer / stain etc.

It is just simple profiled B&Q softwood skirting. Its got a few knots but nothing major and I like them anyway (make it look more natural).

I don't mind it going a bit darker as we have a dark pine effect laminate floor down.

Cheers & merry christmas!

I would never used those sikkens / sadolin type stains myself

I always mix oil based wood DYE with a litle drop of clear varnish...brush it on the wood liberally then wipe of the excess with a soft rag...no brush marks...

Then, when its dry rub it down with fine abrasive paper and give it another couple of coats of clear...eggshell if nice if you can get it, it gives the wood a waxed look

Oh you add the varnish to the dye to make it go further and stop it flicking everywhere...id say about 50/50...but experiment so you get the right shade on the wood.

B&Q..quick dry, Antique Pine, Satin finish.

Perfect shade for you, easy to apply, extremely hard wearing and a lovely finish.

I agree with Zampa. You lock the dye UNDER the clear finish and it looks great. Don't use coloured varnish - it's awful.

Some folk are just a bit slow to catch on to new products. Some of them still refuse to use rollers
