Which type of rechargeable battery?

Thanks again. My current charger is pairs - I think I'll stick with that until it need replacing and then go for one with independent circuits.
 
Just a quick update - the low self discharge batteries are doing fine. Running 6 hours a day for over a week now and counting........ I made an insulating box from 2" thick polystyrene, stuck that in a plastic bag and put it under a flowerpot. It's been unseasonably mild so maybe didn't need the protection but there's still a couple of weeks to go. It's more of a miracle that the lights on the tree survived the 90mph storm last evening - I felt the house shudder a couple of times! The tree is an ornamental cherry and it's also covered in blossom right now.
