I have two external doors, both PvC, with large glass panes, with semi obscured glass, very smooth on one side and a very fine texture on the other side (Stippolyte). The doors were installed in the past few years.

Unlike other doors and windows, where the glass panes were clear and smooth on both sides, and came with stickers ("this side out") - the stippolyte glass doors did not come with stickers on the glass panels.

My question is, which way should the glass be fitted, smooth side internal or external?

I always fitted the smooth side externally. The smooth side provides a better seal against the rubber seals.

Back in the day patterned glass was always fitted to the inside however with the advent of low e coated glass this meant the pattern had to be on the outside as the low e coating is only applied to the clear flat glass and the coating had to be fitted room side

Smooth side inside as a general rule on patterned units. There is one exception , and thats when you have decorative glass on the clear/smooth pane and a patterned second pane, then the decorative pane will always be the outside pane
