Whirlpool dish washer adp4542 program lights problem

Hi Guys

this DW starts up fine and the green start light comes on ok but when i turn the program button to any of the 6 programs the black circles (which i presume are the selection lights) do not illuminate,...eg,.. if i choose the shower icon water enters and heats ok.

I can empty the water by holding in the start button for 4 secs so i am presuming the pump is ok
Also the program selector does not start and stop at the first and last program but goes round and round is this correct?,.... i have opened up the panel and removed the programme box it has a grey spike that goes through the hole in the middle and one side has a flat edge

is the box screwed?

any suggestions would be helpful
