why 4 layers of internal render?

Hi, I'm taking apart my kitchen and have discovered this under the wallpaper:

Can anyone tell me why this column was covered in 4 layers of cement render?
I can't imagine that it is, but could the render be doing something structural for the wall? I want to rip it off and redo the lot in lime plaster like the opposite column.

This is in a basement flat, Victorian mansion conversion, single skin 18 inch brickwork all external walls.
