Dont touch it with a barge-pole..Like painting with semi-skimmed milk!
Buy trade covermatt Crown,Dulux or Leyland..
Always apply the first coat to new plaster thinned by 25-30% (mist-coat)

Gliddens contract matt is the best for new plaster, available from Duluz decorator centres

Thanks for the replies.

It didnt look that bad - in fact it looked OK ... but I'm not a pro!

Would it damage the plaster in terms of breathing etc?

No , it wont cause problems.
The only reason we 'pros' prefer trade paint from trade outlets is that the stuff you buy in DIY stores is formulated for ease of use (ie.more water ,less pigment content )which makes it difficult for us to complete a job in sufficient time to earn our money! ;)

you want to use paint called super leytex-i used this to paint a full house i got replastered and its very good-apparenly thats what its made for-bare plaster and i was impressed.
i gave it 1 coat of this and then normal emulsion over it.
it costs slightly more than conventional paint but well worth it.
most decent trade paint suppliers sell it.
