simple question "is it recommended to turn off my cold water supply when I go away this winter but I want to leave my combi gas boiler running at low temperature" will that be ok?

Turn water off and set wall thermostat to low temperature say 5 or 10 degrees and set the boiler to come on twice a days for 30 minutes will be enough to keep it from freezing up.

Not at all sure that I agree there..... If it turns very cold like the Winters that we had a few years ago (Unlikely but possible) then turn the room 'stat to a low setting, say 10c and leave the heating on constant.... Unless it turns very cold it won't us any more gas and if it does then your home is protected and yes water off...
