Wiring a dimmer to two mains controlled spotlights.

I bought a metal dimmer switch with 2 one way switches on it and I am trying to wire it up to two spotlights which can be wired to the mains. What's the best way to wire these babies up?
I haven't done this before so any help is appreciated.

are you going to wire it in (to what)
or are you just going to plug it in?
more information about your dimmer (exactly how many "switches" has it
do you want both lights "on" at the same time
