I live in rented accomodation and have recently requested a shower, the plumber my landlord has sent to fit the shower has told be that he is not going to bury the power cables in the wall but just put them in trunking. Is this safe/legal. I have trawled the internet but I cant find any rules/regs for this, can anyone help?

Yes perfectly safe and above board to put the wiring in trunking

I wonder if your landlord's plumber can self-certify compliance with Part P of the Building Regulations.......

Thanks t4msy. ban-all-sheds how do I check the plumber is ok without upsetting him?

Just ask him for a completion certificate to BS7671 covering the new circuit, tell him your dad/brother is a building inspector and has told you for insurance purposes he should issue you with one. If he`s not a cowboy he will issue one.

Well - I'm no fan of the new rules, but I am a fan of proper quality work, and testing, and that's what you need to be sure the plumber will do.

There is no reason whatsoever why the plumber should not be able to do a safe and competent job, but he might not. He might not use the right size of cable. He might not fit an RCD if needed. He might not test the circuit before putting it into service.

Your problem is that without knowing him, and how good he is, the only thing you can go by is whether he is registered as a domestic installer. Either that or the electrics should be done by a qualified electrician - if he is properly qualified then it matters a great deal less (or none at all) from a safety perspective whether he is registered to self-certify.

What's your relationship like with the landlord? Is he the sort of person who seeks to abide by the law, or the sort that is less keen?

I don't feel like I can start hassling the landlord and I am glad he is putting a shower in, he is under no obligation to do so. I just thought that electric cables had to be in the wall in a bathroom rather than in trunking.
